How to convert MKV to AVI

  1. 01

    Open your MKV file

Drop the MKV — a film, a recording or any other video.

  2. 02

    Keep AVI selected

For a DVD player or an older TV, turn on “For DVD players and older TVs”.

  3. 03

    Convert and download

Your device makes the AVI. A full-length film takes a while — it's all done locally.

Why use Cutlia for this

For DivX and Xvid players

MPEG-4 Part 2 tagged Xvid with MP3 sound, within 720 × 576 when you turn on the player setting.

Surround to stereo

AC-3, DTS and other multichannel sound is mixed down to stereo MP3.

Made on your device

Browsers can't make AVI themselves; Cutlia's built-in encoder does, so it takes longer than MP4.

Frequently asked questions

Does the AVI keep the film's subtitles and other languages?

No. The AVI gets the video and the main audio track — the one marked as default — in stereo. Subtitle tracks and extra languages aren't carried over.

My DVD player won't play the AVI. What now?

Turn on “For DVD players and older TVs” and convert again — most of these players only handle up to 720 × 576 and 30 frames per second.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. Cutlia processes your video directly in your browser using WebAssembly and your device's hardware. The file never leaves your computer or phone, so it stays completely private.

Is it really free?

Yes. Cutlia is free to use with no account, no trial and no watermark on your export. The site is paid for by the ads on it, and your files never leave your device.
