Why use Cutlia for this
Made for the free limit
Discord raised free uploads from 10 MB to 20 MB in August 2026. The file is planned to land just under 20 MB, with room for the container.
Sharp where it can be
The bitrate comes from your video's length; the resolution steps down — 1080p, 720p, 540p… — only when that bitrate couldn't keep the picture crisp.
Plays in the chat
You get an MP4 with H.264 picture and AAC sound — a format Discord plays inline on desktop, web and phones.
Checked after compressing
If the encoder overshoots, Cutlia compresses again at a lower bitrate, up to twice — and tells you if it still couldn't get under.
Frequently asked questions
What is Discord's file size limit?
20 MB per file on a free account since August 2026 — it was 10 MB before. Nitro Basic allows 50 MB and Nitro 500 MB. A file over your limit doesn't upload at all, so a bigger video has to be made smaller first.
How much video fits in 20 MB?
From a 1080p video: half a minute stays at 1080p, a minute comes out at 720p, three minutes at 540p and five at 360p. The editor shows the size and resolution before you start; if a part can't fit even at the lowest quality, it says how long a part would.
I have Nitro — can I compress to 50 or 500 MB?
Yes: choose Custom size and type 50 for Nitro Basic or 500 for Nitro. With more room the picture stays sharper, and if your video already fits, Cutlia tells you so.
Will my video play in Discord or show up as a file?
It plays in the chat: the MP4 is H.264 with AAC sound, which Discord plays inline. Keep the codec on H.264, the default — HEVC and AV1 are smaller but don't play on every device.
Is it really free?
Yes. Cutlia is free to use with no account, no trial and no watermark on your export. The site is paid for by the ads on it, and your files never leave your device.

Each one is this tool with that size limit set — and every other goal is still a click away.
