How to convert MP4 to GIF
- 01
Open your MP4
Drop the MP4 — a clip from your phone, a screen recording, a video you saved. Other videos work too.
- 02
Pick the moment
The opening seconds are selected: drag the grips to the part you want, then choose the width, frame rate and colors.
- 03
Make the GIF and download
Your device builds one palette for the clip and encodes the GIF; you see it before you save it.
Why use Cutlia for this
Up to 30 seconds
Any part of the MP4, up to 30 seconds of GIF after a speed change. A few seconds is the sweet spot for chats and posts.
Size, smoothness, colors
240 to 800 pixels wide, 10 to 25 frames a second, 256, 128 or 64 colors: each step down makes a smaller GIF.
Loop, boomerang, meme text
Loop forever, play once, or bounce forwards and back — and add a top and bottom line in classic meme lettering.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make the GIF smaller?
Shorten it first: a GIF's size grows with every frame. Then lower the width (320 or 240 pixels), the frame rate (10 fps) or the colors (64). Still parts cost almost nothing — only what changes between frames is stored.
Why is my GIF bigger than the MP4?
GIF dates from 1987: no modern video compression and at most 256 colors a frame, so a few seconds of GIF can weigh more than a minute of MP4. That's normal — keep GIFs short and small, and share the MP4 itself where video is allowed.
Can I put text on the GIF?
Yes: a top line and a bottom line in bold meme lettering, white with a black outline, in three sizes. The preview shows it exactly as it will be in the GIF.
Is it really free?
Yes. Cutlia is free to use with no account, no trial and no watermark on your export. The site is paid for by the ads on it, and your files never leave your device.
